Obituary for James H. "Digger" Lins

MADISON/SPRING GREEN—James Harold “Digger” Lins died April 7, 2018 in Madison at the age of 70.

Jim was born May 6, 1947, in Spring Green, the son of Ted and Kathleen Lins. He graduated from River Valley High School and attended Loras College before being drafted into the Army during the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Bronze Star with “V” device for his bravery in saving the lives of other soldiers during combat. After the war, Jim preferred to keep his heroic actions private, and seldom discussed his experience or recognitions.

Upon returning from Vietnam, Jim worked as an electrician, building homes for Wick Building Systems. He later joined Cardinal Glass Industries and served as Purchasing Agent and Office Manager at the company’s Spring Green location for more than 25 years before retiring in 2007.

Jim was very involved in sports and music throughout his life. He was a three-sport athlete in high school and played trumpet. He remained close with many of his teammates and classmates. He had a beautiful singing voice, but kept that gift to himself—with the exception of joining in an occasional church hymn. Digger was a proud supporter of Wisconsin Athletics. He cherished his times spent with friends in both Spring Green and Madison.

Jim and Patricia McKinney-Lins married in 1981. Their children are Shannon Patrick Lins and Molly Kathleen Lins. Jim’s proudest and most enjoyable days involved celebrating the accomplishments of his children. Jim’s love for his family was his greatest joy.

Jim is survived by his wife Patricia McKinney-Lins of Madison, his son Shannon P. Lins of Chicago, and his daughter Molly K. Lins (Kyle Hovland) of Nashville. Jim is also survived by his sister Maureen A. O’Neill (James) of Spring Green, mother-in-law Elizabeth A. McKinney of Madison, brother-in-law Michael J. McKinney (Deanna) of Mt. Horeb, sister-in-law Cheryl A. McKinney of Middleton, brother-in-law Frank V. McKinney (Patty) of Minneapolis, cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and many friends. Jim was preceded in death by his parents Theodore J. and Kathleen Jordan Lins and his father-in-law Patrick H. McKinney.

May you rest now in peace, Jim.

We would like to give special thanks to the doctors, nurses, social workers and staff at the UW Carbone Cancer Center, Mayo Clinic, Agrace Hospice and to the director and team at the Center for Patient Partnerships. Their care, kindness and compassion was so appreciated.
