Barbara E. Lunenschloss, age 95, daughter of Byron and Bessie (Frankland) Monteith was born in Montfort, Wisconsin on March 8, 1913 and passed away on June 9, 2008. She was baptized at the Montfort Methodist Church and as she grew up was very active in the Church Choir and Sunday School. She attended grade school in Montfort and graduated from Montfort High School in 1930. In 1934 she graduated from the Platteville Teacher’s College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. After a year of substitute teaching in Muscoda and Lone Rock, She taught English in the Belleville High School for about six years. Teaching in Belleville were some of her happiest years, and has several students/friends that she has been communicating with since those early years of teaching. It was in Belleville where she met Neil Lunenschloss, a fellow teacher, and they were married June 20, 1939. They stayed in Belleville until 1944. In 1944, her husband, Neil, began three years of service in the United States Naval Reserve and served in World War II. When Neil left for the service, Barbara moved to Spring Green to live with her sister, Eleanor Hottmann and family. She secured an English teaching job in the Spring Green High School. At the end of the War, Barbara and her husband, Neil, moved back to Belleville, where he served as high school principal for three years, and she as a home keeper and support system. After these three years, Neil entered the University of Wisconsin, Madison where he received his Masters Degree in 1950. While Neil was going to school, Barbara worked at the Wisconsin School of the Air, and they lived in a small motel in Cross Plains. Neil’s jobs in education took them to New Glarus, Appleton and Madison. Barbara enjoyed living in all of these locations as she made many friends and was involved in many activities. After Neil’s retirement from education, they moved to Spring Green where they lived for over 25 years and spent many winters in Florida. During her life, Barbara enjoyed writing, reading, singing, playing the piano, dancing, traveling and spending time with friends. She has prepared a publication on Montfort, which includes a poem she wrote that says a lot about how she looked at life.
SUNRISE TO SUNSET
I do not mind that I have reached the autumn of my
life with winter not far off
For I have witnessed golden dawns usher in the mornings,
Pastel rainbows arch the sky,
Raindrops like tears upon the sweet faces of pansies,
Diligent spiders weaving gossamer webs,
Heavenly blue morning glories with trumpets uplifted
to greet the rising sun,
Pink and white apple blossoms playing hostess to busy bees,
Delicate anemones peeking out from under their
winter blankets,
Jack-in-the-pulpits preaching their first sermons
in the spring,
Fringed gentians and goldenrod enhancing the roadside
in the fall,
And snowflakes drifting down to hide the wounds
of a frost-bitten earth.
How often as our eyes grow dim do we seek Thy help,
Oh Lord, in humble garden plot.
The flowers express their gratitude by fragrant beauty
rising up to greet us.
Help us to give ourselves as unselfishly as they,
Forgetting our infirmities, our griefs, our woes
in serving those most needy,
Remembering always Him whose love was given
oh, so freely.
Survivors include three nephews; Monte (Bonnie) Hottmann of Dodgeville, Bob (Marge) Hottmann of Spring Green, Dale (Judy) Hottmann of Spring Green; one niece, Mary Ruth (Denny) Reger of Windsor; twelve grand nieces and nephews; a nephew and niece of her deceased husband, Neil, Diane (David) Turner of Kokomo, Indiana, Richard (Helen) Coddington of Champaign, Illinois.
