Paul J. Hartung, age 80, of Spring Green, died on Saturday, August 18, 2012 at U.W.Hospital of a heart attack. Paul was born October 27, 1931 in Cuba City, the son of Clarence and Wilhelmina (Lolwing). In eighth grade he began working in the local drug store in Platteville and continued to work there through high school. This early experience motivated him to pursue a degree in pharmacy, which he earned from U.W.- Madison in 1954. While
attending pharmacy, Paul began working for Rennebohm Drug Stores in 1951. He managed several Rennebohm stores before buying the Spring Green Pharmacy in 1971. Paul eventually opened a second pharmacy in Black Earth as well as another pharmacy venture in Richland County. He became president of the Wisconsin Pharmaceutical Association in 1978. In 1980 he was the Wisconsin recipient of the prestigious Bowl of Hygeia award, which honors pharmacists for outstanding community service. He was presented with a University of Wisconsin Citation as a distinguished alumnus in 1984. Paul’s extensive community involvement represented a life-long commitment to make the world a better place. While in Madison, he served as president of the Dane County Pharmaceutical Society and the Madison Jaycees. In Spring Green, he served as president of the Spring Green Community Theatre, refurbishing and re-opening it. Paul was one of the founding shareholders in the Greenway Manor Nursing Home. He has served as president since its inception in 1974. This venture fulfilled his vision for Spring Green area residents to have access to quality care close to home. Paul was one of the original supporters of the American Players Theater, presently serving as the treasurer. Over the years, he also served as a lay minister of St. John’s Church, president of the Spring Green Lions Club, treasurer of the Spring Green Chamber of Commerce, Director on the Sauk Prairie Memorial Hospital Board and other community activities. Paul loved to be outdoors. In his young life, he became an Eagle Scout. He was an active gardener, golfed three times a week throughout most of his life, loved to hunt, fish, travel and follow Badger athletics. Paul is survived by his wife, Joan Hartung of Spring Green, his four children, Debbie of Middleton, Dan of Minneapolis, MN, Gary (Sharon) of Madison, and Janet (Tad) Renfert of Madison. His grandchildren, Melanie Albrecht, Patrick (Gricel) Hartung, Katelyn, Alyssa & Robin Hartung and Karsey & Koby Renfert and 3 great grandchildren. Paul was also very close with Joan’s children, Arthur (Betsy) Kucera of Oconto Falls and their children Courtney & Cole and Jacqueline Kucera of MA. Paul is also survived by his sisters, Jean (Jerry) Jones, Doris Grotkin, a brother Glenn Hartung, former wife Rosalyn Hartung, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law Court Grotkin, mother and father-in-law, Mary and Tony Gundlach. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sauk County Humane Society, the American Players Theater or the UW Pharmacy School. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, August 23, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Spring Green. Fr. Mike Resop will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at St. John’s Church from 4:00 P.M.-8:00 P.M. and again on Thursday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of Mass at 11:00 A.M.
