George N. Moore, age 87, of Richland Center died Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at Pine Valley Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center. He was born March 9, 1923 the son of Leo & Norma (Huffman) Moore. George entered the U.S. Army on January 6, 1943. He was a member of the American Legion Post 13 and Richland Center VFW. On April 16, 1947 he married Wanda Jean Barto and she preceded him in death on October 16, 1997.
George’s greatest love and accomplishment in life was his family, raising three daughters, watching them all attend college and the subsequent arrival of six grandchildren. He took pleasure and satisfaction in sharing his love of the outdoors and teaching others to fish and enjoy the natural environment as much as he did. His proudest moments came when he took his three sons-in-law to the cabin ‘up north’ to appreciate the lakes, rivers and especially the Flambeau Forest where his beloved shack was located.
His journey for many years included his dear wife Wanda and together they left their daughters with cherished memories of the importance of love, family and home. Their life was made complete by the special friends they made along the way and the trips they took up north, over to the river, out west and beyond.
In later years George recalled frequently the times he spent in WWII and how his war experiences shaped his life and offered him companionship through his involvement in the VFW and the American Legion.
As time continued to pass, George quietly impressed his practical wisdom upon his family, encouraging them to participate in opportunities he never had and always supporting them in whatever direction they chose to go. He often reflected on how lucky he was and said, “If I don’t wake up some morning, I want you to celebrate. I have had a good life.”
Survivors include 3 daughters, Terry (Richard) Markos of LaCrescent, MN, Nancy (Mark) Miller of Lakeville, MN, Deb (Charlie) Draheim of Platteville; 6 grandchildren, Matthew (Lauren) Miller of Two Harbors, MN; Mahrya (John) Carncross of Seattle, Washington, Amanee Markos of Stanford, Calif., Ivy Miller of Boston, Mass., Ian (fiancé Melanie) Draheim of Urbana, ILL., Khouri Markos of Fort Collins, Colo.; a soon to be future great grandson; 2 sisters-in-law, Marilyn Moore of Richland Center, Lois Barto of Mauston; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a brother Emery Moore and a sister Avis Carpenter.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, October 30, 2010 at 2:30 PM at the Stafford Funeral Home in Richland Center. Pastor Craig Peach will be officiating. The local Military’s Honor Unit will provide graveside services at the Richland Center Cemetery.
