Name:
Vincent F. Scallon
Date of Death:
Aug 20, 2010

Vincent Francis Scallon, age 97, passed away peacefully at Greenway Manor Nursing Home on August 20, 2010. Born July 6, 1913 on the Scallon family homestead near White Mound in the Town of Franklin, Sauk County, Wisconsin; the eldest son of Frank and Catherine Winifred “Winny” (Phelan) Scallon. Vincent grew up on the Frank Scallon farm in the Town of Bear Creek with his 10 siblings. After graduating from Saint Luke’s High School, he attended Normal Teachers College in Reedsburg with his brother, James. He then began his professional career as a school teacher in the one room Hilldrop School near Bear Valley. During the Depression, Mr. Scallon joined the Civilian Conservation Corp, helping establish a forest conservation project and serving as a camp’s amateur photographer, leaving a collection of early CCC Camp photos to document this period of our history. Following his service with the CCC, Vincent attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison, graduating with a BA degree. After successfully becoming a Certified Public Accountant and a brief stint with an accounting firm in Chicago, Vincent returned to Madison, auditing dorm accounts for the University, auditing rural county welfare programs for the State and eventually joining the Aeronautical Bureau of The Department of Transportation where he spent much of his career auditing municipal airports. In November, 1940 Vincent married the late Frances Marie Dederich of Bear Valley at Saint Paul’s Chapel in Madison, and thereafter they made their home in Madison. Following his retirement, they became winter snowbirds, avoiding the challenge of Wisconsin winters in either Gainsville, Florida or McAllen, Texas until the death of his wife in 1986. A daughter, Antoinette, born in 1942, also predeceased Mr. Scallon in 1946. Survivors include a daughter, Sister Shannon Marie Scallon of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, and sons Patrick (Christine) and Timothy, grand children Hugh (Kelly), Sean (Georgina) and Rebecca; and great-grand children Whitney and William. Other survivors include a sister, Maxine and a brother, Dennis (Rita); and numerous nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and great-grand nieces and nephews. Vincent was also preceeded in death by his parents, Frank and Winny Scallon, siblings James (Grace), Esther (Phillip), Eugene, William (Isabel), Philip (Gladys), Janet (James), Daniel and Leroy (Eileen); a brother-in-law, Thomas McCluskey and several nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held @10:00 am at Saint Patrick’s of Loreto followed by a mass of Christian burial at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 28, 2010. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery, Madison. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the fund for retired nuns of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, Elm Grove, Wisconsin. The Richardson-Stafford Funeral Home of Spring Green is assisting the family with arrangements.
