John Kenneth “Ken” McCarville age 94 of Spring Green passed away on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at the Greenway Manor Nursing Home in Spring Green. He was born on August 16, 1916 in Darlington, WI the son of James and Gen (Wilson) McCarville. After High School he worked for a grocery wholesaler in Madison for 14 years delivering groceries and eventually selling liquor. Ken was married to the former Helen Ann Schlosser on December 30, 1941. Ken then had the opportunity to start his own company, hauling wholesale groceries for Roundy Foods. He sold the hauling operation and got a wholesale beer license and started his own distributing company. Also about the time he started a retail liquor store in Spring Green. His wife, Helen ran the retail store while he ran the distributing operation. When he started the liquor store it was the only liquor store between Madison and LaCrosse. In 1954 Ken obtained the Anheuser-Busch franchise for 5 ½ counties in Southwest Wisconsin which covered from the Dane County line to the Mississippi River. Included in the Ken McCarville Distributing Company operation were the 2 liquor stores in Spring Green, wholesale distribution of beer, wine, liquor, a seven semi-tractor transportation operation and a wine brokerage operation that covered the state of Wisconsin. Ken also invested in and helped organize and build the Greenway Manor Nursing Home. He was still on the board of directors there and for many years was on the Wisconsin Wholesale Beer Distributors Association board of directors. Ken was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church.
Survivors include: his son, John “Butch” McCarville of Spring Green, a daughter, Janis (Mike) Straty of Scottsdale, AZ, 5 grandchildren, Jeannie McCarville of Spring Green, Sheryl McCarville and friend Neil Ellefson of Spring Green, Michelle McCarville of Middleton, John (Holly) McCarville of Richland Center, Melissa (Steve) Hayden of Sun Prairie, 5 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Gen McCarville, his wife, Helen McCarville, 2 brothers, Joe and Bob McCarville, a sister, Katherine Ishmal and a daughter-in-law, Alleen McCarville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Spring Green. Fr. Mike Resop will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday at the church from 9:00 A.M. until the time of Mass. The Richardson-Stafford Funeral Home in Spring Green is assisting the family with the arrangements.
