Nina Mae Weiland
May 31, 2010

Nina Mae (Quigne) Weiland passed away on Monday May 31, 2010 at Richland Hospital.

She was born on July 9, 1923 to John and Amanda (Bottlefson) Quigne of Mt. Sterling, WI. Nina and Addison E. Weiland of Richland Center, were married on July 19, 1941, and after living in several communities, returned to Richland Center in 1957 to make this their permanent home. She worked for many years at Richland Electric Association (REA) and also as a secretary at Jefferson School. She loved to relate tales of “her kids” from school and many kept in touch with her after she retired. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church for over 50 years and a long time member of the Richland Hospital Auxiliary. Her passion was knitting, as is evidenced by the lovingly made afghans treasured by family and friends. She also delighted in knitting baby caps for the newborns at Richland hospital.

She will be remembered with love and gratitude by her daughters Judy Bethke, Richland Center, and Sheila (Thomas) Beatty, Stoughton, grandchildren, Dr. Scott (Kathi) Derse and children, Stacey (Matthew) Hicks and children, Sean Beatty, and Amanda Beatty. She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Addison, great-grandson Andrew, son-in-law Gary Bethke and brother Ernest Quigne.

Her daughters extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staffs of harvest Guest Home, Pine Valley Healthcare and Richland Hospital for their love and compassionate care. Services will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 479 S. Park St. in Richland Center, on Saturday, June 5th, 2010 at 2 PM with burial in the Richland Center Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Saturday at the church from 1 PM until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Richland Hospital Auxiliary or St. John’s Lutheran Church. The Stafford Funeral Home in Richland Center is assisting the family with arrangements.

 
 
Douglas Burton
May 14, 2010

Douglas “Doug” Burton, age 42, of Lone Rock, formerly of Richland Center died Friday, May 14, 2010 at the UW Hospital in Madison. Doug was born February 12, 1968 in Richland Center the son of Harold & Jeanette (Cook) Burton. Doug graduated from Richland Center High School and later at Indiana Wesleyan University in 2001.



Survivors include:

2 brothers Kenneth (Donna) Burton of Hancock, Michigan

Ed Burton of Richland Center;

2 sisters, Nancy (Gary) Pfaff of Lloyd;

Cheryl Burton of North Las Vegas, Nevada;

Niece & nephew, Laura and Michael Pfaff both of Lloyd; a great niece Sophia Perez of Lloyd; other relatives and friends.



He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Jeff Burton.



Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at 11:00 AM at the Stafford Funeral Home in Richland Center. Pastor Josh Pegram will officiate with burial in the Richland Center Cemetery. Friends may call on Tuesday at the Stafford Funeral Home from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM and also, on Wednesday from 10:00 AM until the time of services. Regina Nachreiner
May 12, 2010

PLAIN – Regina Ann Nachreiner, age 97, passed away on Wednesday, May 12, 2010, after a brief illness, at St Mary’s Hospital in Madison, WI. She was born on Mar 14, 1913, Bear Valley, WI. The daughter of Edward & Anna Weitzel (Wolters). Regina was married on April 14, 1931 to Arthur Nachreiner, & was a member of St. Patricks’s Catholic Church. She & Art were married 70 years, and did many things. They were farmers most of their lives, but also were cheese makers, & Regina worked in the shirt factory in Reedsburg in the post WWII period, while Art recovered from back surgery. They also have wonderful memories of the years when they lived in the Village of Plain, and Art worked in the locker. In 1971 Art & Regina along with their son Dan embarked on a retirement dream of having a bar. They renovated the barn that they milked cows in for over 20 years into a bar & restaurant—“The Ridge Club”, which they operated for 30 years. Many good memories of parties, weddings & friends were made during those years. The last 6 years of her life were spent at Greenway Manor Nursing Home in Spring Green, WI. after a spinal cord injury due to osteoporosis. She drove and lived at home until she was 91 y/o & entered the nursing home. Here Regina continued to be very alert & full of life. She enjoyed reading her daily newspaper and many magazines, spending time with friends & relatives especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed having cookies & coffee in her room. Regina had a deep faith, and prayed her rosary daily & attended Mass on Wednesdays with Fr Mike. She had a very keen wit & sense of humor—enjoyed by the people who surrounded her. Her warmth & kindness touched many people. She will be missed by relatives, friends, family and Greenway staff & residents—and all who knew her.

Survivors include six children, Arlene (John) Anderson of Waunakee, Ed (Lois) Nachreiner of Eugene, Mo, Joey (Ron) Snyder of Reedsburg, Jeff (Kathryn) Nachreiner of Plain, Tom Nachreiner (Jenny) of Yorba Linda, Calif & LtCol Mary Nachreiner of Pope Air Force Base/Southern Pines, NC; 21 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren & 2 sisters Helen Hess of Tomah & Mary Beck, Middleton. Proceeded in death by her husband, Arthur Nachreiner, sons Ted & Dan Nachreiner & 8 siblings. A visitation will be held on Saturday May 15, 2010 4-7 pm at Richardson-Stafford Funeral home, Spring Green, WI. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Sunday, May 16, 2010 at 1 pm preceded by a visitation from 1130-1pm at St PATRICKS CATHOLIC CHURCH, LORETO. Norbert Jospeh Paulus
May 5, 2010

Norbert Joseph Paulus, age 89 of Spring Green passed away Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at Sauk-Prairie Hospital, Prairie du Sac, WI. Norbert, son of Albert and Caroline (Haas) Paulus was born August 6, 1920, at home in Franklin township, Sauk County, Wisconsin. On July 24, 1943, he married Eugenia Anna Meyer. They made their home on this family’s farm in Big Hollow, on Paulus Road, between Spring Green and Plain until 1975, when they moved to Spring Green. He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Spring Green, and a past member of the Knights of Columbus. Besides farming the family farm until 1975, he worked for the Sauk County Hwy Department.

He is survived by his six children, 2 daughters, Gloria (Stu) Baker, Laguna Beach, California, Sharon Neuheisel, Prairie du Sac, WI; 4 sons, David, Gary (Maggie) Rick (Cindy) Paulus all of Spring Green, Darrell (Cheryl Bluma) of Pewaukee, WI; 6 grandchildren, Deanna (Falcon) Kosaraju (Ravi) Kosaraju, Troy (Dee Schoenberg) Neuheisel, Tysen (Deb) Neuheisel, Mindy Paulus, Gary Paulus Jr. and Rudy Paulus; 14 great grandchildren, Richard Falcon III, Nicolas Falcon, Maya Kosaraju, Paige, Bailey and Seth Neuheisel, Rachel Prem, Tiffany Neuheisel, Arlena Paulus, Armani Paulus, Angelica Rundle, Arron and Alyssa Mork, Arionna McCoy; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Eugenia, August 6, 2009, his parents, siblings; Herman & Thelma (Gray) Paulus, Roman "Pat" & Dorothea (Kiepert) Paulus, infant sister, Viola Anna Paulus, Alfrieda & Edward J. Gruber, and John Paulus; sisters-in-law, Emma & Adelmer Knuth, Esther & Wilmer Knuth and Dorothy & August Theis; great grandson, Kevin Dean Rundle Jr.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at 11 AM, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Spring Green, Fr. Mike Resop officiating, with burial following at the church cemetery. Paul P. Haas
April 30, 2010

Paul P. Haas Jr., age 83 of Plain passed away on Thursday, April 29, 2010 at the Greenway Manor Nursing Home in Spring Green. He was born on March 18, 1927 in Plain the son of Paul and Katherine (Peters) Haas. He was married on June 6, 1950 to the former Helene Bladl. Paul was a member of St. Luke’s Catholic Church and the Plain American Legion Post #398. Paul was well known throughout the Plain and Spring Green area for his skill as a painter. He loved to cook, bake and cookies were always available which he insisted the grandkids had one for each hand. Some of his specialties were pancakes, donuts, apple pie and cakes. Grandpa’s bologna and corn were famous! His garden was important to him with many delicious vegetables canned and frozen for future use. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and took many trips to Canada. Above all the time spent with his family was the most important to him. Paul was a man ahead of his time in that he was a very involved father and didn’t hesitate to change diapers, feed and bathe his kids. He was a loving husband who always knew what to do. Paul will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Survivors include, his wife, Helene Haas of Plain, 5 children, Kathy (Gary) Hack, Karen Hilsenhoff, Barb (Bruce) Rideout, Betty (Rick) Onofrey all of Madison and Dan (Jan) Haas of Mount Horeb, 7 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, 2 sisters, Angie Shemak of Highland, Arlene Duren of Madison, a brother, Lawrence (Pat) Haas of East Troy, 3 brothers-in-law, Sandy Duren of Spring Green, LeRoy Holzworth of Madison and Dick Lawrence of Hastings, MN., nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Katherine Haas, a son, David Haas, 3 sisters, Marie Meudt, Elizabeth Holsworth and Katherine Lawrence. A Mass in memory of Paul will be held on Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Plain at 11:00 A.M. Fr. Mike Resop will officiate with burial in the church cemetery where military graveside rites will be conducted by the Plain American Legion Post #398. Visitation will be held on Tuesday at the church from 9:30 A.M. until the time of Mass. The family would like to thank the staff at Greenway Manor Nursing Home for the wonderful care and respect given to Paul.

Shirley Ann Weber
April 21, 2010

Shirley Ann (Williams) Weber, age 82, passed away peacefully on the morning of April 21, 2010 at Heritage Manor in Elroy.

Shirley was born December 6, 1927 to Pastor Roy and Phyllis (Fuller) Williams in Sugar Grove, Wisconsin. She married Hugh Weber in 1947. They farmed on Dach Ridge for many years where they raised four children.

Shirley is survived by her former husband, Hugh of Viroqua, daughters, Linda Riley(Kevin) Wilkins of Spring Green, WI, Marianne (Bob) Walker of Tomah, WI, Celia (Bob Senters) Weber of Glenmoore, PA, son, Paul (Kathy) of Palmer, AK., grandchildren, Jeremy (Brooke) Riley, Jeffrey (Amanda Miller) Riley, Bobby Jo (Barry) Taylor, Sara (Elliot) Blackdeer, Jacob Weber Senters, Rebecca (Patrick Hellen) Weber, Aaron Weber, 12 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. She is further survived by two brothers, Gerald (Laura) and Paul (Pat) Williams, and sister-in-law Linda Williams Dufty.

She was preceded in death by her parents, father and mother-in-law, Harold and Nellie Weber, one brother, Keith, a sister Ruth Strahm, and beloved grand-daughter Hannah Grace Weber.

Dennis F. Cummings, age 56, of Mazomanie, died Saturday, April 17, 2010 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison. He was born June 11, 1953 in Janesville, Wisconsin the son of Cyril P. & Jane (Williams) Cummings. Dennis worked 28 years at McFarlane’s as a steel salesman.

Survivors include 3 sons, Jeff (Tracey) Cummings of Mineral Point, Eric Cummings of Mazomanie, Dennis “Eddie” Cummings of Mazomanie; a grandson, Zach Cummings of Mineral Point; 3 sisters, Linda (Chris) Quellhorst of Tripoli, WI., Kathy Lund of Watertown, Peggy O’Neil of Beloit; 2 brothers, Raymond Cummings of Beloit, Greg O’Neil of Beloit; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Cyril Cummings and Jane O’Neil; and a brother-in-law Thomas Lund.

Richard Edward Calnin
April 8, 2010

Richard Edward Calnin, age 86, of Richland Center, Wisconsin passed away on Thursday, April 8, 2010 at Pine Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center after a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease.

Richard Calnin was born on September 7, 1923 in Appleton, Wisconsin to Rose and Frank Calnin. After working on the family farm, he moved away from home to complete a degree in philosophy at Jordan College in Menominee, MI and St. Francis Seminary in Milwaukee, WI. In 1948, he joined the military as an intelligence officer serving in Germany from 1949-1953. He met his wife, Mechtild, by the holy water fountain at church in Nurnberg, Germany. They married on January 8, 1953 and returned to Wisconsin to teach languages at St. Norbert College in DePere and raise their family of four sons. During his years at St. Norbert College, Richard built two beautiful homes for his growing family, erected several windmills for energy production, and in 1972 traveled to Arequipa, Peru with his family for a nine-month study tour. After retiring from St. Norbert College in 1981, he and his wife purchased an eighty-acre farm in Richland Center, WI where they converted the barn into a home. During his time in Richland Center, he taught Spanish at UW Richland and became an artist, using wood and recycled metal to create furniture, fountains and unique objects for homes and gardens. He has shown his work in galleries and art fairs throughout the state.

Richard Calnin is survived by his wife, Mechtild Calnin, four sons, Wolfgang Calnin and his wife Susan of South Milwaukee, WI, Norbert Calnin and his wife Susan of Richland Center, WI, Roland Calnin and his wife Regina of Holland, MI, and Tim Calnin and his wife Katherine of Green Bay, WI, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Alice Stingle of Appleton, WI and Julia Wendt of Hortonville, WI, his brother, Earl Calnin, and wife Lorraine of Hilbert, WI, and his sister-in-law, Pat Baum of Hortonville, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rose and Frank Calnin, of Black Creek, WI and his brother, Frank Calnin, of Hortonville, WI.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Richland Center, WI or Pine Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center in Richland Center, WI.

A memorial mass for Richard Calnin will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, April 16, 2010 at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Richland Center, WI. Father Emmanuel Famiyeh will celebrate the mass, and Stafford Funeral Home is assisting the family. The church will open at 10:00 AM for friends and family to visit. A luncheon will be served after the memorial mass.

The family would like to thank the staff at Pine Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center and the staff at Richland Hospital for their excellent care during the past nine months. Special gratitude is extended to Dr. Robert Smith for his support throughout the years of Richard’s illness.

 
 
Barbara J. Troxel
April 6, 2010

Barbara J. Troxel, age 78, Muscoda, died April 6, 2010 at Meriter Hospital in Madison after a short illness. She was born March 31, 1932 in Gays Mills, WI, to Winston D. & Myrtle (Rayner) Gander. After Winston died, Myrtle married Carroll Craig in 1940. In 1954 Barbara moved to Madison and in 1955 married Merle F. Thomas at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They had four children Susan, Garry, Ronald and Robert. After Merle died, she married Kenneth L. Troxel in
1978. He preceded her in death in 1993. Barbara was well known throughout the community. She served as a member of the of the Muscoda Rescue Squad for 30 years and the Muscoda Library Board for 25 years. She was a Master Gardener and after retiring from Land’s End, she devoted much of her time to the garden she shared with her sister.

Barbara is survived by her children, Susan (Michael) Maskaleris, of Waldorf, MD, Garry Thomas of Muscoda, WI; Ronald Thomas of Richland Center, WI and Robert(Angi) Thomas of Holmen, WI; grandchildren Whitney, Caleb, and Ethan Thomas of Holmen, WI, Alex and Allison Maskaleris of Waldorf, MD; Sister, Eileen Gander of Muscoda, WI; Sister-in-law, Ina (Ken) Sletten of Madison, WI, and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, step-father, and both husbands.

Private family services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Muscoda Rescue Squad or Muscoda Library. The Stafford Funeral Home in Richland Center is assisting the family with arrangements. .

 
 
Christina E. Nee
April 5, 2010

Christina E. Nee age 89 of Spring Green passed away on Monday, April 5, 2010 at the Greenway Manor Nursing Home in Spring Green. She was born in Plain on November 23, 1920 the daughter of Michael and Mathilda (Reaser) Ring. She entered Spring Green public schools in 1926. She graduated in 1938 from Spring Green High School. After graduation she worked for Florence Schoenmann who roomed and boarded three school teachers. The Schoenmann house was where the Spring Green Pharmacy is now. From 1938 to 1941 she waitressed for Popes Café, which was a famous restaurant in the 1950’s and was located where Denny’s Barber Shop now stands. From 1941 to 1943 she worked at Badger Ordinance Plant near Baraboo. On August 23 1943 she married Francis “Swede” Nee. In December 1943 she took a job at Nina’s Department Store that still is in Spring Green. She worked there until April of 1955. From 1956 to 1970 Chris was a part-time employee of the State Bank of Spring Green and part-time bookkeeper for Owen King Lumber Company from 1956 to 1963. From 1970 until 1978 she was a part-time employee of the Bank of Spring Green and from 1978 until retirement on January 1, 1986 she was a full-time employee of the Bank of Spring Green. Swede and Chris had traveled a lot during their marriage and planned on doing more after her retirement. She lost the love of her life on September 25, 1986. Chris traveled with relatives and friends for the next 20 years and was able to see many beautiful areas of the world. Chris was a great lover of flowers and always had a beautiful flower garden at her house. She could take any sad looking violet and in a matter of months turn it into a flowering plant. She also loved dogs and playing cards. She is survived by several nieces and nephews, Darlene Larson of Deerfield, Kay Schneider of Sparta, Ramona Ampe of Tacoma, WA., Janet Koch of Madison, James Koch of Cottage Grove, Patricia Brown of Deerfield, Cathy Anderson Hill, Mary Grieb and Margaret Hutto all of Visalia, CA., Owen Nee of Rye, NY., John Nee of Greensboro, NC., along with their families. She is also survived by a special friend, Marsha Grant and her family of Spring Green. Chris was preceded in death by her parents, Mike and Mathilda Ring, her husband, Swede, a sister, Verena Koch and a nephew, Richard Koch. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Spring Green. Fr. Bill Nolan will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday at the church from 10:00 A.M. until the time of Mass. Memorials may be made to St. John’s Catholic School.
